A New Year's invitation!

Metro and most transit agencies are offering free rides on Saturday, in futile hopes of keeping hoards of drunk drivers off the road New Year's Eve.

I don't drink and consider New Year's Eve a holiday for idiots, but free is free.

Always I've been curious about the King County water taxi, but the fare is $5.75 each way, and that's more than I'm willing to pay for curiosity.

For one day it's free, though? That's a good price.

So the plan for Saturday is, breakfast at Little Pat's, of course, and then we're off for a short tour of Seattle. Anyone who's interested is very invited to join me for any portion of the following agenda.

First, breakfast at Little Pat's, at 9:15.

At approximately 10:25, the #120 bus will take us north, to Roxbury Street.

If our bus luck is good, we'll be at Roxbury @ 15th Avenue at 10:37, to catch the #128 to West Seattle. If our bus luck sucks, we'll loiter at Lee's Produce up the street on Delridge Way, maybe buy some cucumbers or onions, and catch the next #128 bus, at 11:08.

At Alaska Junction in West Seattle, we'll hop from the #128 to the #773, which goes to the westside dock at Seacrest Park.

What time would that be, you're wondering? Ha! It's our third bus ride, so by then time will be meaningless — missed connections or heavy traffic can change everything. The only time that's for certain is 9:15 at the diner.

From the dock, we'll ride the water ferry to Pier 50 in downtown Seattle. Wind in your hair! Salt in your nostrils! Where are the life preservers, and do they have one that'll fit a fat guy like me?

On the waterfront, we'll maybe have lunch at Ivar's, but maybe not. I'm trying to eat healthier than grease-fried fish, but I'll certainly succumb to temptation if you're buying.

After lunch (or maybe not lunch) we'll wander through Pioneer Square, inhaling the city's official scent of urine.

Then we'll walk a few blocks to Third Avenue, and say goodbye. From downtown, buses go everywhere, and you'll be home in an hour or so.

Me, I'll take a #131 bus to my boarding house, where my recliner awaits.

Please RSVP via text if you'd like to join me for any or all of the above. If nobody RSVPs, then same as breakfast, I'll have my lovely excursion alone, and that's AOK too.

And it's all free (except meals). Yippee!

Drive safely, or better yet, don't drive. Happy New Year!

Please note that every leg of this journey will be on public transit, and at no time will I be stepping into a motor vehicle that's not a bus or a boat.
