Settling into September

Tuesday, August 27, 2024

It's Doug — your brother, uncle, friend, or just that odd fellow. I continue to be fat and jolly, like Santa without the sleigh, doing anything & everything cheap and fun for retirement.

And you continue to be invited to come with me.

My hot tip: If you're decrepit like me, get a Gold Card, for seniors. It's free from the City of Seattle, but you don't have to live inside city limits.

The Gold Card yields lots of discounts for old folks — free admission at the Aquarium, and 75% off at Woodland Park Zoo, etc.

Here's everything I'm up to, and you're always invited to join me for any of it!

Holler if you have questions.

Holler if you don't have questions!

Picnic at Freeway Park
700 Seneca Street, Downtown
Ham & cheese on rye for me, one day during the last week of August, when it's not raining, and not too hot.

This concrete park was a favorite of mine when I lived downtown. It's a fabulous spot for a picnic, or simply reading a good book in the summertime sunshine.

Expect street characters, sure, but that's a plus, not a minus. The drunks and fentanyl-heads are sometimes ... memorable, but almost never dangerous.

Cheap eats road trip!
Breakfast at Maggie's on Meeker
307 West Meeker Street, Kent
9:15 AM • Friday, August 30

Connections Museum
7000 East Marginal Way, Georgetown
10AM • Sunday, September 1

This place is about the history of phones (the old-fashioned, hard-wired kind). I hate phones but love old technology, and they have antique phones and radios, switchboards, etc.

It's free, but only open on Sundays.

Washington State Fair
110 9th Avenue SW, Puyallup
Pick a date, September 2 - 22
(Fairgrounds closed on Sept. 3, 4, 10, and 17)

I want two hamburgers buried under onions, and two hot dogs with sauerkraut, and a snow cone and kettle corn, and I want to see the horsies and ride on the spinning whirligig, and then I'm gonna puke so watch out.

That's how I do the Puyallup.

General admission: $15. Seniors: $12.
Such a deal!

Picnic at Kerry Park
211 W Highland Dr, Queen Anne
I'm going during the first week of September,
one fine day when it's not raining, and not too hot.

Kerry is a city park with fantabulous views, daytime or after dark. It can be a little windy, so check the forecast, but if the weather cooperates there's no better place for a picnic.

Walking tour of Pioneer Square
I'm hoping to get Squared during the first or second week of September, any day when it's not raining, and not too hot.

HistoryLink's map is my guide, but mostly I'll follow my own footsteps wherever they lead me.

This will be a mile or two of walking, and when my feet are tired, the walk ends.

Phase IV at the Beacon
4405 Rainier Avenue South, Columbia City
4:30 PM • Thursday, September 5

Phase IV is a science fiction flick directed by Saul Bass, who was famous for designing memorable credits sequences, like the sliding UN Building at the start of North by Northwest. This is the only movie Mr Bass made, and I've heard that it's pretty good.

The story? Ants try to take over the world. I'm rooting for the ants.

Tickets: $12.50.

Breakfast at Little Pat's:

First and third Friday of every month
Next: 9:45 AM • Friday, September 6

Strolling the Kubota Garden
9817 55th Avenue South, Rainier Beach
I'll be wearing my psychedelic windbreaker among the flowers during the second week of September, on some day when it's not raining, and not too hot.

These Japanese gardens and grounds were a gift from Fujitaro Kubota to his wife, and after their death, they were gifted again from the family to the City of Seattle.

So it's a second-hand park!

I've been there, but only once and it was years ago. It's beautiful, tranquil, and free.

A new post goes up on Douggles.com
Tuesday, September 10

Where in the world is Douggles McDouggles?

Cheap eats road trip!
Lunch at Herfy's
5963 Corson Avenue South, Georgetown
Noon • Friday, September 13

This isn't the Herfy's you remember — that chain went bankrupt, and with its trademark no longer protected, these guys simply seized it. But they do make good burgers, and terrific milk shakes.

Georgetown Steam Plant
6605 13th Avenue South, Georgetown
10:30 AM • Saturday, September 14

This is an old steam-powered facility for generating electricity. It's a National Historic Landmark, and it sure looks cool in the pictures. It's 'steampunk'!

Admission is free. Guided tour starts at 11:00. There's one flight of stairs to be climbed, and the only restroom is a honey bucket.

Petting zoo at Ounces Taproom
3809 Delridge Way SW, West Seattle
3PM • Saturday, September 14

"Our beer garden will be transformed into a petting zoo with goats, piglets, bunnies and ducks for you and your littles to pet! Event is FREE and all ages!"

Fiestas Patrias at Seattle Center
11AM • Sunday, September 15

This is a celebration of Latin American countries, cultures, food and dancing and such. I'm not dancing, but I'll watch the dancers dance while eating I'm exotic burritos.

And it's free (except for the food, of course).

Monthly movie
This is a virtual event, you and me watching from wherever we are, and snarking via text.

Next: Beverly Hills Cop
2PM • Monday, September 16

Beverly Hills Cop is as good as you remember — just about the perfect action comedy:

Also, some standing invitations
— any time, any place:

• Board games

Chess, Monopoly, Parcheesi, Rummikub, Scrabble, or whatever. I'll bring diet soda and maybe snacks, but you gotta provide the game.

Major breakthrough — I've discovered The Missing Piece, a cafe that welcomes game players, so now I can actually sorta host an afternoon or evening of board games.

I'll buy coffee or Cokes, but you gotta buy your own food if you're hungry. (I tried one of their sandwiches and it was great.)

Chess online

It's easy — make a move once daily, once weekly, or whenever you get around to it. It's all online, and it helps prevent brain calcification.

For years, I've been playing game after game after game against one friend, but I'd love to play somebody else.

Don't know chess? It's pretty easy & I'd be happy to teach.

• HORSE at the house

OK, here's the plan. We meet at the red house that became blue and is now white, sneak onto the old patio, and play a best-four-out-of-seven tournament of HORSE.

Winner gets bail posted by the losers.

Or, I suppose we could play HORSE anyplace that has a hoop — a park or your garage, maybe?

• Our sister Helen

Any time you're going to see Helen, I'd love to come along.

Weird food

In these golden years, I'm doing things I've never done before, and two of those things are pizza with anchovies and chicken and waffles.

Pick a time and place, and let's eat adventurously.

 THE BASICS:

Please RSVP so I know you're coming. All events are 'Dutch treat'. Please remember that I'm a weirdo.

These are zero-pressure invitations. I'd love to see you, but if you can't make it my feelings won't be hurt.

If you're wary about something because it sounds bonkers or you've never done it before, that's kinda the point

"Try it, you'll like it!"
