Retirement continues to be most marvelous. Highly recommended! Donald Trump should try it.
My recent adventures include an evening with Alfred Hitchcock at the Grand Illusion, an art walk at the Seattle Center, and the Punk Rock Flea Market. Upcoming adventures are listed below, and as always, you're invited.
Most of my field trips go into the city for arts and entertainment, food and fun.
If occasional wisecracks can be believed, I should be dead by now, because every corner of Seattle is filled with fentanyl, bums, scary black people, and piles of corpses killed by gang warfare and the anarchists at CHOP/CHAZ.
Take it from me, though: Reports of the city's dangers and demise have been greatly exaggerated. Seattle is the home of everything that's cool about living in the northwest, including me.
Three-quarters of a million people call Seattle home, and very few are
mugged or murdered. Doug says, be not afraid.
If you're reading this, you're invited.
• Please RSVP by the day before.
• All events are 'Dutch treat'.
• Please remember the basics of Doug.
• And don't forget the standing invitations!
If something below sounds bonkers or you've never done it before, that's kinda the point. Doug says again, be not afraid.
Cheap eats road trip!
Lunch at King Buffet
20 SW 7th Street, Renton
11 AM • Tuesday, September 24
Bus excursion and picnic at Madison Park
Wednesday, Sept 25 or Thursday, Sept 26
There's no better way to explore the city than simply riding public transit, looking out the window, with no particular destination.
This trip will be on the #11 bus, from downtown to Madison Park, for a picnic at the park.
Cheap eats road trip!
Lunch at Jack's BBQ
3924 Airport Way South, Sodo
Noon • Friday, September 27
And after lunch we're visiting Helen for a sing-a-long and a few hugs!
7 Stories at Highline Heritage Museum
819 SW 152nd Street, Burien
7PM • Friday, September 27
Will the stories be interesting? Never been to this event, so I can't say, but they do it monthly so if people keep showing up, it's probably not awful.
What's it cost? Your guess is as good
as mine — the website doesn't say, and they ignored my two emails
asking. Ordinary admission to the museum is $8, though.

Cheap eats road trip!
Lunch at Lockspot Cafe
3005 NW Locks Place, Ballard
10:15 AM • Saturday, September 28
The Lockspot is more than a hundred years old, quaint and cool. It's famous for fish'n'chips and chowder, which is probably what I'll order.
On the weekend, they have homemade cinnamon rolls, and I'll have one or two for dessert.
The Last Laugh at Grand Illusion
1403 NE 50th Street, University District
6PM • Sunday, September 29
Old movies are the best, and this one's a hundred years old. No talking; it's silent.
I've never seen The Last Laugh, but I've seen a terrific old movie made by the same dude, F W Murnau —Nosferatu (the original Dracula movie), so I'm gonna give The Last Laugh a look.
Tickets: $12, or $9 for seniors.
Fair warning: This theater is up a flight of stairs, with no elevator/escalator option.
Ye Olde Curiosity Shop
Pier 54 • 1001 Alaskan Way, Waterfront
Monday, September 30
I bought a (very small) alligator's head from Ye Olde, by mail order, when I lived in Wisconsin, and used it as a candy dish on my desk at work. Would you believe, some co-workers were hesitant to take peppermints and bubble gum from an alligator's jaws? Oh well — more candy for me!

Lake Union Park
860 Terry Ave. N, South Lake Union
Tuesday, October 1 or Wednesday, October 2
This park is where several historic ships dock, including the Virginia V, one of the original ferries that sailed Puget Sound a century ago, now available for walking tours and occasional sailings.
Also docked here are the retired fireship Duwamish, the 1889 tugboat Arthur Foss, and the 1911 fishing schooner Tordenskjold.
Bring a piss-pot, as the only public restroom is inside the Museum of History and Industry. The museum is at the same address, but I'm not at all confident they'll let you in to pee.
Henry Art Gallery on the UW campus
15th Avenue @ 41st Street NorthEast
Thursday, October 3
There's enough on display for at least two hours wandering, maybe longer, and there's a 'Sky Space' exhibit that turns a small view of the open air above into a permanent art exhibit.
Admission is free on the first Thursday of every month, so guess which day I'll be going?
No backpacks allowed.

What Is a Chief? at King Street Station
303 South Jackson Street, International District
6PM • Thursday, October 3
I'm going because everything I know about Natives I learned from John Wayne, who's perhaps not the most fair and accurate source on the subject.
Admission is free, but events like this are notorious for uncomfortable chairs, so I'd advise bringing a seat cushion.
