October 15-24, 2024
Good movie: Ace in the Hole (1952). From Billy Wilder and starring Kirk Douglas, this might be the most cynical movie ever made, and to me it's hilarious.
Good music: "Diamond Lil," by the David Bromberg Band. It's a letter to a friend who's living the wrong life.Good reading: The Future Remembered:
The 1962 Seattle World's Fair and Its Legacy, by Paula Becker. All about how Seattle got the '62 World's Fair and the Seattle Center.
Here are my plans for the next week or so. You're invited to anything that sounds interesting.

• All events are 'Dutch treat'.
• Please remember the basics of Doug.
• And don't forget the standing invitations!
UFO Northwest at Redmond Library
15990 NE 85th Street, Redmond
Wednesday, October 16
"Relying on the FBI records, this talk exposes a Washington story that shapes our current UFO narratives, from 1950’s pulp magazines to the ubiquitous X-Files and Men in Black film franchises."
Color me skeptical about spacemen, but it's free.
This invitation might sound familiar — it was on the list a while back, but catastrophic bus luck kept me away. This time I'll be there, for sure!
Seat cushions recommended.

Carnival of Souls (1962)
Attack of the Giant Leeches (1959)
A Bucket of Blood (1959)
It's
an extremely low-budget effort, but great if you give it a chance.
Almost surreal, it's about a woman who survives a car wreck but remains
haunted by it. It's one of my favorites, and not much like any other
horror movie you've seen.
Admission to see all three movies, one after another, is "Pay what you can," with a suggested minimum of $10.
Stories of Us: Camp Second Chance at
Westside Unitarian Universalist Church

Free, but donations are invited, and I'll probably fork over a tenspot.

Monthly movie: Duel (1971)
at Mark Groenig's house
Sunday, October 20
This is the movie that made Steven Spielberg's name, before Jaws, before Close Encounters, before ET. Made for ABC's "Movie of the Week" on TV, it was supposed to be schlock like all the other made-for-TV movies of the era, but it's fantabulous!
Cheap eats: Emerald City Fish'n'Chips
3756 Rainier Avenue South, Rainier Beach
Monday, October 21
I've never been to this place, but I love fish'n'chips and theirs isn't mass-produced. Word on the street is — yum!
