Lunching at Phở Thu Thủy in White Center
on Tuesday 1/28
I love y'all, truly, even the family members who voted for Trump and think he's better than apple pie à la mode. My opinion is slightly different, that he's the most horrifying and dangerous human in American history, so — let's agree to disagree!
If you're a Trump believer, we can talk about old times or the Mariners or the weather, but do us both a favor and let's not talk politics.
The foreigner who resides with
you must be to you like a native citizen among you; so you must love him
as yourself, because you were foreigners in the land of Egypt. I am
the Lord your God.
—Leviticus 19:34
Some high points from my last week:
• breakfast with Mom & the family, and a visit with Helen
• an old western with shorts at Grand Illusion
• a marvelous Ethiopian lunch at Cafe Selam
• my first try at Native American cuisine, at Nacho Mama's
• not watching Donald Trump make a mockery of the oath
• All events are 'Dutch treat'.
• Please remember the basics of Doug.
☼ Chess!
Word is that Crossroads Mall has an atrium where people play informal chess, pretty much every day. I've been looking for a chess club, so one day this week I'm grabbing my board and headed to the mall.
☼ Food!
• There's more to life than burgers and fries! In the next few days I'm having my first taste of pho from Phở Thu Thủy in White Center, and taking an every-6-months-or-so pilgrimage to Seattle's finest greasy spoon, Beth's Cafe in Green Lake.
• Reminder: The next family breakfast at Little Pat's is Friday, February 7.
☼ Movies!• 'Secret Saturday Matinees' run weekly in January, at the Grand Illusion, and 'secret' means they don't tell you what movie is showing until the lights dim. This Saturday's show will be the last one, before the theater closes. If you come, I recommend bringing a seat cushion.
• I kinda love movies, especially movies where you can't guess what's happening next and you might have to think about what you've seen when it's over. Disney, no. David Lynch, yes. Lynch made some of the great mindbending movies of our time — Eraserhead, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, etc — but he died last week. The Beacon is showing a feature-length collection of Lynch's clips and quotes on Tuesday night.
☼ Music!
• If you're up for some sad music to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day, it's Monday at Benaroya Hall, and it's free
• One day soon, I'm going to Georgetown Records in (you'll never guess) Georgetown, and the Fantagraphics Bookstore, which shares the same space.
☼ Theater!
Plays now playing that I'd be happy to see:
• Where Is Here? (ends Feb 2) at Seattle Public Theater
• Gold (ends Feb 8) at Annex Theater.
Click the links for more info. Tickets are reasonably priced and/or on a sliding scale, because Douggles doesn't do $75 seats.
And coming soon:
• Blues for an Alabama Sky (runs Jan 30- Feb 23) at Seattle Rep. I'd prefer the preview performances, since they're cheaper.
☼ Vietnamese New Year!
It's an ethnic event with food and dance and funkiness, Sunday at the Seattle Center's Armory Food & Event Hall and Fisher Pavilion. Free!
☼ Walking!
I'm
trying to take a substantial walk once weekly, rain or shine or snow. My upcoming to-walk list includes Pike Place Market and Seahurst Park, but not on the same day.
